  • hello.. obviously i'm new here, only recently heard about deviantart (duuuh.. :journalmood: and i've been at epilogue and elfwood for almost a year!).  Not much to add now... will update with the rest of my stuff sometime soon, until then, enjoy

  • 04/07/03--11:00: busy (chan 2616223)

  • argh... loads and LOADS of school work to do.  Exams are sort of looming, and I've got lots of art prep.

So if I do post stuff, then it is more likely to be school stuff, rather than my prefered fantasy/sci-fi and dark art.

Also, I'm trying to sort out two webcomics (why do I always do that sort of thing when I've got exams?) so I might post work from those too.

  • 04/26/03--07:44: blah blah (chan 2616223)

  • well... nothing interesting has been happening to me.  I did, however, finish my first commission last week, which a kind of odd experience, but one that I am more than willing to repeat, I was lucky enough to have a great client.

I haven't uploaded it here, though, because I'm really not all that happy with it, and its not my usual type of work.

(yeah, this is a hint as subtle as a brick :P)

I'm slowly getting through my school work, all of which is far too embarrassing to upload here.

  • 05/12/03--12:47: art exams over (chan 2616223)

  • woo, yeah! art exams are now over!

So maybe (just maybe) I'll have more time to work on various other projects (like jane kennedy again, and that other comic i've been working on).

Of course, I've still got exams in OTHER subjects, but there aren't really that many.

  • 06/11/03--01:59: Exams = Finished (chan 2616223)

  • All my exams are now over, and now I can concentrate on other things.

Jane Kennedy has restarted, over here: http://janekennedy.keenspace.com

I've also got a DA prints account, I'm in the process of resizing some of my work to be applicable for printing.  If there are any images that anyone desperately wants to be available, then let me know.

  • 08/06/03--01:43: Holiday (chan 2616223)

  • Just got back from a 2 week holiday, which is why I haven't been around.  Back now though.  Duh.

  • 11/02/03--06:04: Prints (chan 2616223)

  • Okay, so one of three things has happened.

1: DeviantArt (or rather, deviant prints) are screwing me over
2: There was an accidental administrative error
3: Someone didn't actually buy a print off me, even though they said that they did.

If anyone has bought a print of mine from deviant prints, then please comment here to let me know.  I've asked the DP staff to look into this 'missing print', but so far all I got was an email saying that they would, and then a mass email about cheques.

  • 04/01/04--10:46: Going Away (chan 2616223)

  • I'm going away for a while- first I'm going to a music festival (All Tomorrow's Parties, somewhere near Hastings, in the UK naturally.  If anyone's going then I'll see you there!) then it's off to visit relatives over Easter.

By the way, if anyone is currently debating whether to see the new Dawn of the Dead or not, I'll make up your minds for you.  Go and see it.  It's the funniest thing I've seen all year.

  • 04/14/04--09:29: Hate @ Photoshop (chan 2616223)

  • Okay, so I have a horrible horrible problem with photoshop (v5.5).  Sometimes when I open the colour picker the help window pops up (couldn't say why).  Usually it just goes away after I close it, but occaisionally it just refuses to stay shut and opens everytime I click on something.  Meaning I can't do anything with my painting, such as save the 5 hours of progress i've made since my last save.  If I'm 'lucky' (like I was today) I can take screenshots of parts of the painting then copy them into Illustrator or something to then stick together in photoshop later (with much colour loss, and sometimes de

  • 05/11/04--09:42: PA (chan 2616223)

  • So if any of you read Penny Arcade, you may have noticed that I won that colouring contest, which is nice.  I mention this because my website might collapse under the wang strain, so it might be down.  But it won't be permanently down.  That is all.

  • 06/30/04--04:01: Prints again (chan 2616223)

  • This weekend I will be bringing my print prices into line with the new DeviantPrints pricing policy.

So if you would like to purchase any prints at a cheap price, then do it before Saturday.

Saturday is also when I'll be making the rest of my paintings available as prints too, so keep watch!

  • 09/11/04--07:51: Moving and other rubbish (chan 2616223)

  • Well, it hasn't been a great summer for me as far as computers are concerned.  Various crashes, hard disk faults and possible viruses have meant that emails and other things have been lost (no work, luckily, but i've lost loads of time waiting for everything to get fixed).  Actually, just in case anyone to whom this applies is reading: if you did send an email in the last few months and didn't get a response, chances are your mail was deleted or lost before I had a chance to respond.  I wasn't being rude or anything, so feel free to direct email to my hotmail account (camouflage_trainers at hotmail dot com).

  • 10/02/04--09:42: Back online! (chan 2616223)

  • Well, I'm back online.  What the university accomadation brochure didn't mention was that the internet in all university flats goes through a proxy server.  So, no POP3 email, and apparently no FTP.  I can't even access the control panel of my website.  If anyone knows any FTP short-cut things then I'd really appreciate it if you dropped me a line (I've been using Neomail to get at my email account, so no real problems there).

My laptop doesn't seem to display compressed images very well - psd files show up great, but I can see every single bit of .jpg distortion on small image files.  Colo

  • 02/06/05--08:14: Just a couple of things... (chan 2616223)

  • Okay, firstly I'd just like to briefly apologise to anyone devwatching me for the resubmissions of the Sunrise:Sunset series.  I need separate prints of them for an interview at college, so it had to be done.  I'm trying to change to an illustration course, but they want to have a little look at my work first, so I'm taking them a few illustration projects.

My website was taken down around the middle of December, but its sort of back at my old address - http://aliceart.charmguild.com.  I actually did this redesign ages ago, in August, but I didn't get around to finishing it before I left for university (where

  • 02/19/05--16:15: hey man, hey! (chan 2616223)

  • Man, am i glad thats over! I guess frail has a thing for my landscapes or something.

I'm starting to have Potter-like feelings for Series of Unfortunate Events - I can't stop reading them.  I've been trying to ration myself so I don't run out too fast, but tonight I really NEED to start reading the Grim Grotto.  I keep telling people who've never read them all about VFD and the crazy conspiracies that are going on.

Talking of conspiracies, I've also been buying the 100 Bullets paperbacks and they are awesome.  I've found that the Blackwells (thats the er..unofficial official bookshop

  • 03/11/05--05:30: useless (chan 2616223)

  • Well, I failed to get myself into college again today.  It's a severe case of skivitus, and its starting to piss me off.

In other news, I've been watching loads of films.  I had a high school movie day last weekend (Clueless, Election and 10 Things I Hate About You - all awesome movies).  I also saw Life Aquatic which was also awesome - Owen Wilson is so lovely.  I saw it at a late showing, so there weren't many people there, but when my friends went to see it lots of other people left.  It's pretty sad that they didn't enjoy it, but really, what were they expecting? It's just like any othe

  • 03/29/05--08:47: give me your money soon (chan 2616223)

  • So I'm thinking of selling some original (well, you know what i mean) artwork, probably some things similar to Queen of Silence http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/6770611/ and Stratosphere http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/6809019/ (but probably not those two paintings because they are on my wall and I like them being there) and maybe some small drawings too.

I was thinking of using e-bay, just because that way I don't have to set the price, and I can't back out at the last minute (seriously, I'm worried I'll do that). Anyone got much experience with selling stuff like that? Anyone want to request anything (who will then buy

  • 05/19/05--08:00: Revenge (chan 2616223)

  • What an awesome movie!  I won't bother to go into detail about the film, but I thought it was excellent.

I went to the 12.35 showing (the time all cinemas over here were showing it for some reason) last night.  We'd pre-booked, but our seats were all over the place (allocated cinema seats = rubbish idea), so the seat finding staff said we could sit right at the front, which was boss - I was right in the middle.  The whole experience was very exciting, I love late showings of movies especially on the first day of release, as I've probably mentioned before.

Marvel seem to have released a paperback

  • 08/27/05--10:05: absence (chan 2616223)

  • I probably haven't mentioned it here but I've been having some problems attempting to change course from fine art to illustration.  These "problems" have led to some misleading communications on everyones part including my own and the whole thing has been a complete mess.  This led to me failing the year, so I've been up in Edinburgh resitting some exams i was told i would have to take in the first place.  I have no internet at my apartment so I haven't been around much.  Not that I've been around much anyway, but I blame that on the endless administrative hoops i seem to have been jumping through.

  • 12/07/05--08:35: oh look! (chan 2616223)

  • I'm back online!

Updates pending, gotta go through 3 months of messages and emails

  • 01/14/06--05:59: Hi (chan 2616223)

  • So I've been filling my time with comics and movies, and a little bit of school.

I'm bored with what I draw and paint, so I wanted to let people know that I am available for commissions now.  Prices vary, so don't be afraid to ask, but I am unlikely to do anything for less than 40 of your united states dollars.  I can quite good at drawing things like hot chicks and misty landscapes but you can ask for anything you like. I am happy to mail up to an A4 print (they are lovely, I can assure you) but any sizes bigger than that you are on your own.  Art trades may also be acceptable, as is bartering with non-perish

  • 03/12/06--12:13: For all those spies... (chan 2616223)

  • If you are into that kind of thing (spying) then you may be interested to know I now have a myspace profile (http://www.myspace.com/alice_rocks).

Feel free to add me so I can pretend to my friends at college that I know loads of people (just send me a little note if you do so... I like to know who my "friends" are).

In other news, I'm going to see The Knife perform live in London soon! I'm pretty psyched about that, it should be good (it better be, since its on the other side of the country).  The Knife are a Swedish electro-dance duo who are fairly scary.  They have good songs.

  • 03/31/06--03:43: people with products (chan 2616223)

  • Okay, so the deadline for this is very very soon, but I feel as though I should plug it anyway.

    http://www.homeofthesampler.com/info/stylelounge.html

If you have stuff to sell then it might be worth submitting a proposal.  I am working on my own submission right now, I think that this could be a really cool opportunity in many ways (so even though if I get in it will probably be a great financial loss for me I don't mind).

  • 04/21/06--03:22: spring cleaning and rambling (chan 2616223)

  • At the end of April I will be deleting some old stuff from my gallery, probably including some prints, so now might be a good time to buy if you are really desperate to own my old rubbish.

I think I might have reached a strange point in my life where I'm suddenly uncertain about everything.  Which is strange because for years things have been so clear.  I just wanted to state that somewhere.

I've been attempting to keep a blog but everytime I try to make an entry I think of something better to do.

  • 06/17/06--09:53: new website! (chan 2616223)

  • I have [finally] uploaded my new website! It doesn't really have much on it that isn't here though.

  • 04/25/07--03:52: hello, hi, how are you? (chan 2616223)

  • Hi there!

Well, I'm alive, just not drawing apparently.  Been busy with stuff for school, which is all drawing/painting/illustrating but not much of it seems to work outside of the studio context (by which I mean it is rubbish - no, really) so I haven't uploaded anything here. I've also been working on a 12 page comic for an anthology which isn't published yet so I can't upload any snippets from that.

I feel like I haven't been active on the internet at all for the past year, so if anyone wants to be my friend then feel free to get in touch and we can be e-buddies.  You can show me all the latest haunts t

  • 05/23/07--04:21: yo, wassup (chan 2616223)

  • Hello everyone, how are you today?

Today I'm getting ready to start working on a paper that is basically about fanart.  I'm going to write about the various creative responses artists and non-artists have to videogames.  I want to do some thorough research so I was just wondering if anyone who is reading this would like to give their own thoughts on the subject, whether they are positive or negative.  I've been combing the internet for journals, books and blog entries, but if anyone has any good links they would like to share then please feel free.  I'm also in the middle of preparing some tough ques

  • 06/02/07--05:07: free picture drawn for you by me... (chan 2616223)

  • ...if you are the 122,222nd (or closest) visitor to my main page.  Take a screencap or something and send it to me! It's a little way off yet, but I figured I should alert you guys.

I actually can't believe that so many people have looked at my page, its crazy!

I'll draw almost anything for the lucky 'winner', including characters, fanart, robots, cats, fruit and household appliances but I do reserve the right to request something else if I feel as though it is beyond my mad skillz.

  • 06/08/07--02:21: kiriban (chan 2616223)

  • Wow, so that hit 122.222 pretty fast! The lucky (ho ho) winner is :iconmygirl: - and sorry to the people who wanted it but didn't get it, I now feel kinda bad for introducing a competitive element round here.

I'd also like to give my thanks to :iconaudley: for giving me a subscription! I'd forgotten how much better browsing DA with a subscription is.  Now I've just got to figure out what this CSS business is all about.

Also, a quick question - whats this about keeping files for print under 30mb? I have started intentionally working massive (much to the dismay of my poor computer) so that I can print things large, but the file

  • 10/28/07--04:32: vent (chan 2616223)

  • I want the internet at my house right now!!!!

(I moved.. again..  to a place with a disconnected phoneline.  I really need to stop doing that)

  • 12/22/07--15:37: lulz (chan 2616223)

  • I just spent 4 hours reading Encyclopedia Dramatica.  Now I'm stupider.

  • 01/03/08--15:53: right now... (chan 2616223)

  • ...I'm in Seattle! Oooh, exciting!

The moderate culture shock is freaking me out... like waiting for the lights to change before crossing the road, even when there are no cars? Weird! And why can't the marked prices of things include the tax?

also: where are the vegetables? seriously now! where are they?

Is anyone else attending the conceptart.org workshop here at the weekend?

  • 02/02/08--06:51: new blog (chan 2616223)

  • I decided to start a blog - stuff I've been posting there is work in progress, sketches and the like- so basically all the things that don't quite make it over here.  Anyway- go check it out!
    http://alicedraws.blogspot.com

I've also been posting on an awesome new collective blog http://gorillaartfare.com/ which is way more exciting than my personal one!

In other news its my final year of college so I'm pretty busy which goes some way towards explaining lack of updates over here despite having loads of stuff to post.  I'll get around to it soon!

  • 06/01/08--10:03: new website (chan 2616223)

  • So now I'm done with school, and I have entered into the vast world of the freelance illustrator.  Balls.

I made a crappy new placeholder website to celebrate this horrible fact: www.aliceduke.com

  • 03/24/09--10:32: prints (chan 2616223)

  • I just uploaded some of my recent deviations to the print shop.  Check it!

  • 08/04/09--11:22: working that internet thing (chan 2616223)

  • Okay, so, I just spent a pretty fun day running around the internet tidying up after myself.  This counts as 'work', apparently, except I'm not entirely sure who I'm going to bill for it.

The result is that I now have a twitter (http://twitter.com/aliceduke) and a flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/aliceduke/) (also don't forget about my blog! http://alicedraws.blogspot.com).  So if you like to digest information in a slightly less grey/green environment then head over and add me.  I can promise content, but not quality.  I find it pretty hard to keep track of things on deviantart, whic

  • 06/23/11--12:29: tumblr (chan 2616223)

  • Okay okay okay. Here it is.

I bloody well love it that people put my old horrible nonsense on tumblr! Seriously. Keep it up! I made my own, I mostly use it as an alternate portfolio: http://aliceduke.tumblr.com/
